Re: Don't kill me!

:eng: Don't kill me!

:Aloha: hvo mah yaralāvah!
/ɸʷɔ mʌh jærəlavʌh/

Me.acc NEG rob! Lit: do not rob me!

Which is different to say 'do not steal from me' in that context. That would be:
hve mah yaralāvah!
Me.from NEG rob! Lit: do not take [sthing] from me!

"I will walk by you, always."
Does 'always' in this context mean forever, for all time, or every time?

Re: Conlang - Aloha

If I get you right, a phone is a type of sound uttered from the mouth, while a phoneme is a symbol representing particular sounds or phones? Like in your example 'p' as in pit /pʰ/ is not the same phone as 'spit' /p/. Or 's' in susie is both /s/ and /z/, meaning 's' is a phoneme for /s/ and /z/ rig...

Re: Pronouncation ability survey

/ʙ/ /ɰ/ /ç/ /x/ /ħ/ /ǃ/ /ǂ/ /ǁp/ /ç/ was often used instead of /ʧ/ when speaking fast. But never could master /r/ - native english speaker here. Could do the other trill variants, but damn, this was the hardest to get the hang of. It was not until I heard a young boy do /rrrrrrrrr/ like a helicopter...

Re: Conlang - Aloha

What are you not sure about? What a phoneme is? Yes. Is that like what defines when one says hat as opposed to fat? And light vs right? like syllabic consonants (which are phonological vowels, but phonetic consonants) I take it you are on about consonants like /j/, /w/ and /ɹ/ that are like semi-vo...

Re: Conlang - Aloha

Ok, so in certain environments /a/ is unstressed and is realised as [h], is that right? And this is same environments where /i/ becomes [ç], right? Yes. As [h], LOL. Same for /i/ as well [:)] Are fricative-/a/ and vowel-/a/ separate phonemes, or not? If they are not, they shouldn't appear twice i t...

Re: Conlang - Aloha

You were talking about Aloha allophony, while I was talking about phonemes in general. Ah, allophony is it? Thanks, fixed it up. That is an interesting thing you have there, but you really need to describe it better. I still don't get what a fricative vowel is. Thanks. A fricative vowel is basicall...

Re: Conlang - Aloha

So, /h/ is basically a devoiced /a/, is that right? What's would be the justification for that analysis? Does /a/ > [h] in the same environments as, for example, /i/ > [ç], or? Yes, that's right. The reason is that /a/ is unstressed, and thus would undergo devoicing to /ǝ/ or /h/ depending on its n...

Re: Conlang - Aloha

so...what "ancient languages" will you be mining? Hawai'ian, Latin, Norse, Nahuatl, and Armenian. Not all sounds need breath; non-pulmonic sounds may utilise other airstream-mechanisms. Do you mean clicks? They still require breath to happen, to build up in the lung/oral cavity so one can...

Re: Conlang - Aloha

Quick question, do you mean /ɫ/ or /ɬ/? / ɫ / - the dark 'l'. Fixed up. Thanks for pointing that out. What? While it is disputed whether /h/ is a real consonant or rather a phonation type, it is not a vowel either, since it lacks the common features of vowels. H seems to be the foundation phonation...
