Re: Typological voting game

12. B) Moderately complex syllable structure (maximally CRVC)

My suggestions for a vowel inventory:

/i ɛ ɑ o ɨ/ (to which we could add /ə/ if we want, but my suggestion is meant as a 5V system)
/i ə u e a o/ (possibly with vowel height harmony where /i ə u/ alternate with /e a o/)

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Basically, though, yeah, the alternation remaining in place after the rise of epenthetic vowels (thus removing the initial trigger for the alternation) could happen. Yes, and the alternation would probably even be expected to stay in place (as long as it's salient enough and not regularized away th...

Re: CBB Conlang Relay XII - ONGOING (signups remain open)

I would hypothesise that mistranslations go through a cycle: fraying > patching > reworking > fraying In phase 1, the text is more or less coherent. Translators feel confident in translating fairly directly. However, over time oddities build up, until the coherence of the text is threatened. During...

Re: CBB Conlang Relay XII - ONGOING (signups remain open)

The Bokisig text that I received had 75 words, and my English translation of it had 138 words. The Ronc Tyu text I sent on had 190 words, and my English translation of it had 217 words. So it seems I alone added 80 words, or more than 50% of the length of the previous text. However... Part of the in...

Re: CBB Conlang Relay XII - ONGOING (signups remain open)

Torch has been passed on to cedh! Received. Received. I'm not sure how much time exactly I can devote to the translation in the next few days, but I think it should be OK... Well, our side of the translation is averaging over a week per person, so I wouldn't worry too much... The translation is don...

Re: CBB Conlang Relay XII - IT BEGINS (signups remain open)

Except it does make the question I was going to ask a bit more pressing: when we send you the English translation from our leg, which one do we send - what we think the message we received said, or what we think the message we sent on said? That is a good question! [:D] I think the usual practice h...

Re: CBB Conlang Relay XII - SIGNUPS OPEN - STARTING Saturday 11th July - TWO RINGS

I would love to translate out of Asta, if the schedule works for that. Into which language though...? Lerudųrunį probably won't be up for the challenge in time, so I may have to use one of Ronc Tyu, Buruya Nzaysa, or Ndok Aisô as a fallback.

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

German allows the construction but I don't know if it's completely parallel. You can either say (1) or (2) without much difference in meaning: (1) Mein Frühstück heute my breakfast today `my breakfast today' (2) Mein heut-iges Frühstück my today-ADJ breakfast `my breakfast today' I don't think this...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

So basically, something along the lines of 'this man killed him' to say 'I killed him', where ""this"" is a 1st person affix marker... I don't know about natlang attestations, but I like it. Exactly this! One could say something like... Lhu dyrosofon swí mhwno. Lhu (D/t)yros-of-...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

What orthography could I use for this vowel system? I was thinking of using tildes to indicate nasalization, but I am not sure how I could write /ɨ/ and /ɨ̃/. I was thinking of using <v> and <ṽ> respectively, but I don't think any language uses those letters for those sounds. /i ɨ u e o a/ /ĩ ɨ̃ ũ ...

Re: The Sixth Conversation Thread

Random thought for tonight: We have the initialisms "wtf" (what the fuck), "tfw" (that feeling when) and "ftw" (for the win). That's three of the six possible permutations of those letters. Someone needs to come up with meanings for "fwt", "twf" and...
