Guess the Word in Romlangs
Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Is a cognate of stig found in other Romance languages, particularly French?
Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
No, I don't think so.

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Well, actually...
No descendant of the Proto-Germanic root of stig is found in Romance languages, but there are cognates with the PIE root, such as, apparently, style.

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Well that's very generous of you, but I did intend the question in the direct descendant of the PGmc word sense. Thanks for the hint
Is it a descendant of *stikiz?

Does <stig> descend from *stigiz?
Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Does it mean something like to climb a ladder?
Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
That is the literal meaning of the word - "ladder-climb" - but in actual use it has a metaphorical meaning.

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Is it related to career advancement?
Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Or, career advancement is a topic of conversation in which this word might likely be used. (it's a little more general)

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
So, to climb the ladder? Like to get successively promoted?
Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Close, but... It's not about the success, and its more general than the workplace.

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Are there similar idioms in other languages?
Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Hmmmm... none come immediately to mind
Ok, there's an adjective X in English and "to be X" is roughly what stigscandr means. X is an adjective of the form Noun-Adj and a calque in Boral would be something like migt-famous.

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Whoops, forgot about this somehow.
Does it refer to (a type of) ambition? Or, rather "to be (some type of) ambitious, to have (some type of) ambition"?

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
I think I'll take it! The exact word I had in mind was "to be power-hungry" but that's much the same. Well done!shimobaatar wrote: ↑08 Dec 2018 13:46 Whoops, forgot about this somehow.
