If you're curious, the phonetic evolution is (showing 1-3 minor changes per step):
fæːlzian > fɛːɫziən > vɛːɫziə > vɛwzjə > vøzjə > vøʒə > vøʒ
and while "to cleanse" is still a possible use for it, it's more commonly used today to mean "to sanitize" or "to disinfect".
